The Storm

The angry sea was a churning caldron of wind and waves,  crashing against their small fishing boat. . .

The sea of Galilee was known to have sudden and violent storms and one was upon them.  The disciples  boat creaked and groaned as it was tossed against the raging waves and they feared for their lives.  They called out to one another to hang on. Then they saw a man walking the water, thought he was a ghost and cried out in fear.  But Jesus immediately said, "Be of good cheer, it is I and do not be afraid."   Peter boldly replied, “If it's you Lord, command me to come to you on the water."  Jesus said "Come."   Matthew 14:29.

Have you ever wondered if Peter had second thoughts about stepping out of the boat? Was is an impetuous act? Or was Jesus testing his faith?  I’ve heard messages that focused on Peter's lack of faith. But Peter was the only one willing to step out of the boat. He did what the other disciples were afraid to do.  He got out and walked on the water.  Yes, he faltered and sank  Why? He took his eyes off of Jesus,  looked at the storm and it overwhelmed him with fear.   Anyone can be overwhelmed by fear, it's a natural response to a life threatening situation. We're surrounded by signs that tell us the end is drawing near.  Earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, murder and mayhem is happening everywhere. It feels like our world is in constant state of agitation and like a storm on sea it refuses to be still. But there is one who can still the storm. . no matter where or how bad it may be.  His name is Jesus!

The storms of life show up when you least expect it and vary in intensity.  Jesus told us we would have trials and tribulations in this life  {John 16:33}  But he also said “ Be a good cheer I have overcome the world”.  Although those words are intended to comfort us, it’s hard to feel comforted when your body is ravaged by cancer, a loved one dies or a natural disaster leaves you homeless.  But the Lord knows  all about  our fears and insecurities, and calls us to come to him.  He lifts us out of the murky waters of fear   stills the storm and restores our hope. He’s an ever present help in time in time of trouble. {Psalms 46:} I don’t know what you’re going right now  but call out to the Jesus and let him still the storm within and without.
